{"id":247,"date":"2026-09-28T05:54:13","date_gmt":"2026-09-28T05:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xactlegal.com\/blogs\/?p=247"},"modified":"2026-09-28T05:54:13","modified_gmt":"2026-09-28T05:54:13","slug":"income-tax-treatment-of-deceased-individuals-in-pakistan-tax-year-2027","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/xactlegal.com\/blogs\/2026\/09\/28\/income-tax-treatment-of-deceased-individuals-in-pakistan-tax-year-2027\/","title":{"rendered":"Income Tax Treatment of Deceased Individuals in Pakistan &#8211; Tax Year 2027"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbr.gov.pk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Federal Board of Revenue (FBR)<\/a><\/strong> has outlined the income tax treatment of deceased individuals and their estates for <strong>Tax Year 2027<\/strong> under <strong>Section 87 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The provision establishes how outstanding tax liabilities, estate income and tax proceedings are handled after the death of an individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tax Liability After Death<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under Section 87, the <strong>legal representative of a deceased individual<\/strong> is responsible for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tax that the deceased would have been liable to pay if they had not died.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tax payable on income earned by the deceased person&#8217;s estate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the legal representative&#8217;s liability is limited to the extent that the <strong>deceased person&#8217;s estate is capable of meeting the tax liability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Income Tax Ordinance also provides that the tax liability is a <strong>first charge on the deceased person&#8217;s estate<\/strong>, subject to applicable legal provisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tax Proceedings Can Continue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The death of a taxpayer does not automatically end existing or potential income tax proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proceedings that were already initiated against the deceased can continue against the legal representative from the stage reached at the time of death.
