FBR Wealth Statement for Tax Year 2027: Key Requirements

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) requires resident individual taxpayers to provide a wealth statement and wealth reconciliation statement along with their income tax return, where applicable, under Section 116 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001.

For Tax Year 2027, taxpayers should ensure that their assets, liabilities, expenditures and sources of wealth are accurately reported and properly reconciled.

What Is a Wealth Statement?

A wealth statement provides FBR with a financial overview of a taxpayer’s position. Depending on the taxpayer’s circumstances, it may include:

  • Assets and liabilities in Pakistan
  • Foreign assets and liabilities
  • Bank balances and cash
  • Property and vehicles
  • Investments and securities
  • Business assets and liabilities
  • Personal and household expenditures
  • Relevant assets and liabilities of dependants

What Is Wealth Reconciliation?

The wealth reconciliation statement explains how a taxpayer’s wealth changed during the tax year.

The increase or decrease in wealth should be properly reconciled with:

  • Income earned during the year
  • Personal and household expenses
  • Purchase or sale of assets
  • Investments
  • Loans and repayments
  • Gifts and other relevant transactions
  • Other sources of funds

An unexplained difference between opening and closing wealth can create questions regarding the source of funds and accuracy of the declaration.

Who Needs to File a Wealth Statement?

Under Section 116 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, resident individual taxpayers who are required to file an income tax return may also be required to furnish a wealth statement and wealth reconciliation statement.

Members of an Association of Persons (AOP) may also have applicable wealth statement and reconciliation requirements.

Foreign Assets and Liabilities

Taxpayers should also consider assets and liabilities held outside Pakistan.

Where the applicable conditions are met, residents may have additional reporting obligations relating to foreign income and assets. Foreign bank accounts, properties, investments and other overseas assets should therefore be reviewed before filing.

Can a Wealth Statement Be Revised?

A taxpayer may revise a wealth statement to correct an omission or inaccurate declaration, subject to the conditions and time limits prescribed under the law.

Taxpayers should maintain proper supporting documents for any material changes or revisions.

What Should Taxpayers Prepare for Tax Year 2027?

Before filing, taxpayers should review:

  • Bank balances and cash
  • Residential and commercial properties
  • Vehicles
  • Investments and securities
  • Business assets
  • Loans and other liabilities
  • Foreign assets, where applicable
  • Personal and household expenses
  • Sources of funds for newly acquired assets
  • Opening and closing wealth
  • Supporting financial documentation

Why Accurate Wealth Statements Matter

A wealth statement should be consistent with the taxpayer’s income tax return, financial records and actual financial position.

Accurate reporting can help taxpayers maintain proper tax compliance and provide a clear explanation of changes in wealth when required by FBR.
